We Strengthen Smiles with Fluoride Treatments in Rowlett, TX

While you and your family may not be familiar with the word “fluoride,” this important compound is all around you – in foods, in water, and even in toothpaste. In fact, many neighborhoods add fluoride to their water supplies if it isn’t already present. Why? Because research over time has shown that drinking fluoridated water on a regular basis actually lowers the chances of tooth decay by a significant amount, especially in children, resulting in stronger, healthier smiles that last for years to come.

At Rowlett Dental Kids, our practice offers professional fluoride applications as needed for young patients in need of an extra boost. Please contact us today if you have any questions, or if you’re ready to schedule a first appointment with Dr. Tera Pollock. She loves welcoming new patients from Sachse, TX and other nearby neighborhoods!

How does fluoride prevent cavities?

When dangerous bacteria find their way onto tooth surfaces, they begin to break down and weaken the structure at a gradual pace. The presence of fluoride strengthens the enamel of the tooth discouraging this from happening, also aids in the remineralization process, resulting in stronger enamel.

Dr. Pollock will carefully examine your child’s teeth during checkups and discuss dietary habits with parents (such as the frequency of drinking bottled water, which usually doesn’t contain fluoride) to determine whether additional fluoride treatment is needed. She may also recommend the use of fluoridated toothpaste or mouthwash at home.

Is fluoride safe for children?

Water fluoridation has been proven to be a safe and very effective preventive treatment! However, there is such a thing as receiving TOO much fluoride. This condition, known as fluorosis, can cause small white marks to appear on teeth over time. At Rowlett Dental Kids, our goal is to help young patients receive just the right amount of fluoride to reap the valuable benefits they and their oral health deserve.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver diamine fluoride is quickly becoming a popular treatment approach to cavities in children. Silver diamine fluoride is a colorless and odorless liquid that is both faster and cheaper than drilling and filling cavities.  SDF also has been shown to lower caries risk in children and the elderly. The FDA has approved silver diamine fluoride for the reduction of dentinal hypersensitivity. Dr. Pollock will carefully apply the liquid and blot the treated area.
